PROCLAMATION

 

 

A PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING THE 125th ANNIVERSARY IN THE

CITY OF NEWBERG of the ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH

 

WHEREAS, Russians of German Lutheran heritage immigrated to the United States in the 1800’s,

 

WHEREAS, some of these individuals settled in the Fernwood District southeast of Newberg,

 

WHEREAS, a number of German speaking Lutherans did organize in 1894 a church known as the German Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church of Newberg with services held in German,

 

WHEREAS, this congregation has spread generosity, neighborly help, and community building through its service outreach including helping to start FISH – the local food bank. They continue their support today with an emergency shelter, and Monday evening meal for the community,

 

WHEREAS, this congregation remains vital and active with 200 congregants in 2019,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RECOGNIZED by the Mayor and City Council of the City of Newberg, Oregon, that the Zion Lutheran Church of Newberg is a vital part of the City’s History, and that 2019 marks the 125th anniversary of the church in the City.

 

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and cause the Seal of the City of Newberg to be affixed on this 5th day of August 2019.
