The Newberg City Council met for an emergency meeting on July 07, 2021 and took the following actions: Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue District Chief Al Kennedy explained the extreme fire conditions in the region. City Manager Weinheimer explained the reason for the meeting. There was discussion on limited resources available to fight fires from fireworks, bans in other communities, just cautioning people versus banning outright, fines for illegal fireworks, regulating purchases versus use of fireworks, exception for Newberg Old Fashioned festival, enforcement, safe zones, duration, current burn bans, and state of emergency declared by the Governor on wildfires, Motion 1: To ban fireworks for the season and declare a state of emergency in the City of Newberg for 30 days. No vote taken Motion 2: To amend the first motion, and declare a state of emergency in the City of Newberg for 30 days. Motion approved. Motion 3: To enact an immediate ban on fireworks until July 19th when there can be a more robust discussion on the impact to staff. Motion approved.
