Folks, this is a “reminder” that the Safety Data Sheets for City Hall are located in the hallway across from the restrooms (picture below).

If you do not know what an SDS sheet is, please kindly respond to this email, I will gladly give you the training your employer is required to give you by law.

The following guidelines are required in order for the City to successfully maintain a safe working environment regarding workplace chemicals:

  1. 1. if you buy a chemical of any kind and bring it in to City Hall you must add that chemical’s SDS sheet to the book.
  2. 2. no chemical that represents a hazard to human health or the environment should be purchased, and it is the purchaser’s responsibility to check the SDS sheet before purchasing.
  3. 3. Any chemical found that does cause such a hazard will be collected and disposed of by Operations without discussion.
  4. 4. Also, with the exception of the Police Armory, no hazardous substance is allowed at City Hall. The definition of a hazardous substance is anything that has one of these four properties: flammable, corrosive, reactive or toxic.
  5. 5. Since there is no centralized purchasing or chemical approval process at this time it’s critical that the purchaser of a chemical check what they are buying. If you do not, then the City will not be incompliance with Federal rules and you could be putting employees in danger.
  6. 6. if you use a chemical in the workplace, you must check the SDS sheet and don the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment specified (PPE). The City will supply this PPE to you.

While everybody knows that the fastest way to find an SDS sheet is by google searching the product name, OSHA directiveDirective Number CPL 02-02-079, states “The employer must not require employees to perform an Internet search (e.g., Google®, Yahoo®) to view/obtain the SDS”. So that’s why we have to have the book.

The best thing to do is to think of a way to do your work that does not require chemicals. If you need help figuring out how to do a certain task without a chemical you are welcome to contact Operations, we can help you problem-solve and provide alternatives. If you know of any chemicals at City Hall, either because you use them regularly, or because you purchased them, please add their SDS sheets to the book. If you need to dispose of a chemical, contact Operations, we have a hazardous waste drum at the Shops.

Respectfully,

Andy Peters
