Hi Candis,

I sincerely thank you for your response. I was told on the phone I do have enough experience (12 years this month) as an engineer to qualify for comity for my PE license in Oregon as a Civil Engineer. Regardless I do agree with your thoughts and think it may be beneficial to send a letter just in case. It’s my understanding the board meets on May 16th, so if you have time to do so before then I would appreciate a brief letter on behalf of the college’s support.

My biggest issue with OR is that I find it saddening that most folks in this situation have to pay $400.00 to NCEES to verify what is apparent on the transcripts if they do not have 12 years’ experience under a supervisor with registered PE license.

I have attached the email with the letter that I original received from OSBEELS. Jennifer O’Neill is the contact. She is extremely understanding and friendly if you want to give her a call ahead of the letter.

Let me know if you have any additional questions and thank you again for the support.

My best,

Jennifer Cline, P.E.

Subject: RE: WSU Manufacturing program

Dear Jennifer,

I and my staff, including Dr. Hakan Gurocak, Director of the School of Engineering and Computer Science (WSU-Vancouver), have investigated this issue including reviewing the historical communications between WSU and ABET, and holding discussions with an ABET accreditation director. As you know, when we sought the establishment of a Manufacturing Engineering program at WSU in Vancouver, we also sought ABET accreditation of that program, which was granted officially in August of 2002, and made effective retroactively to October of 2000. Unfortunately, ABET is inflexible on this, even though they did confirm that this is actually not uncommon when new engineering/computer science programs are stood up.

It is interesting that the state of Washington did not find an issue with this, although the state of Oregon is finding one.

If it would be useful, I will draft a letter to the State of Oregon licensing bureau, (1) explaining the history, including dates for the ABET visit and accreditation actions (it was accredited at all of WSU, not specific to WSU-Vancouver); (2) including the links to the ABET website showing the accreditation; (3) explaining the ABET policy at that time, which is different from the current policy, but nevertheless, still applies to historical actions; and (4) including program requirements and curricula from both the time of the review and the time from your graduation, demonstrating that there were no changes between the two.

If this is helpful, please send me the information on who I should address in such a letter. Let me know if there are other points that should be emphasized.

I hope I can be helpful.

Sincerely,

Candis

Subject: WSU Manufacturing program

Hello,

In June of 2000 six (6) of us graduated from WSU Vancouver with the promise our Manufacturing Engineering degree and program was to be ABET accredited within the next few years. And it was, however it was only retroactive to October 2000. I recently ran into an issue trying to receive comity with the State of Oregon on my PE license. Luckily I just have enough experience to cover the need and do not need to have a review done by the NCEES which is $400.00.

At this point, what can be done? The majority of the coursework we completed coincided with mechanical engineering courses, and were also taught the following year that was included under your accreditation.

Thank you and I look forward to your response.
