Subject: Shirley well data

Jennifer,

Data for the Shirley well is attached. The only data that stands out is the total coliform (TC) result of 51.2 MPN/100 ml. It is important to note that E. coli tested absent (<1 MPN/100 ml) and in my mind, this rules out any potential impact from the AB overflow.

I called Waterlab to inquire about the TC result. I asked if they ever see positive tests for TC in homeowner wells and she said “quite often”. There can be many reasons for this, including:

· Maybe the spicket from where the sample was collected is not regularly used and the water needed to be flushed for longer than the recommended 3 to 5 minutes (this was the flush interval used for all three of the wells that were tested).

· Maybe there was some work done on the well recently and some dirt reached the aquifer or got inside the pipes somehow. TC is ubiquitous in the environment and can be measured in soil or “dirt”.

· Maybe there is not a backflow prevention device on their system and dirty water got into the line after a power outage.

· Perhaps the wells seal is compromised.

At any rate, I realize that the Shirley’s will be concerned about the TC result so some thought needs to be given about how to respond to them. There are two companies that could probably take a closer look at their specific situation and determine a course of action to get rid of the TC in their water:

· Fisher’s Supply in Canby (http://www.fisherssupply.com/)

· Shilo Water Systems in Mt. Angel (http://shilohwater.com/)

Another initial option could be to retest their water for TC and let the water run for at least 10 or 15 minute rather than the normal 3 to 5 minutes. I’m sure that more discussion will follow…..
