Hi Mike,

That sounds like an environmentally safe product. Good to hear that you have chosen to use it.

Does the water drain to your storm system or into the street? If so, do you have inlet protection or a sump in bottom of the basin/inlet that catches the debris from any run-off? If you do have a sump in your basins, are they vacuumed/cleaned out annually?

Thank you for the info. I have put out a group e-mail that we are not to schedule car washes without written permission from the city. This way we know that they have spoken with someone over there and that they have been educated. My next question is what about the apparatus that we wash on a daily basis? The soap that we are currently using is designed for school buses and has a neutral PH so that it doesn’t strip wax and that documentation can be provided if needed.

Subject: Fundraiser Car Washes

Hi Mike,

This weekend I notice there was a carwash fundraiser at the fire station. As much as the City is in support the local fund raisers, I need to bring to your attention that run-off to the storm drains are prohibited without proper inlet protection. Specifically, soapy water with a pH level of less than 6.0 or greater than 9.0 is also prohibited, per the Molalla Municipal Code 18.20.020.

The majority of the City storm system drains directly to Creamer or Bear Creek and then onto rivers of the state. The City is working with DEQ in regards to the State’s TMDL requirements to improve surface and stormwater runoff in the City Limits. One of the ways we can make improvements is through education. So moving forward, we would like to continue to allow fundraising carwashes in the community and at the Fire Station, we just ask the groups to stop by City Hall and speak with Nicolas or myself before doing so.

Let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your cooperation.
