Hard to say why they went with the 6”, I agree the reducer should have been installed at that time.

I’m guessing minimal plan review?

Hi Jen,

Well, TetraTech or City direction to TetraTech did you no favors. They should have installed a 12”x8” cross so you could build in a 8” backbone system for fire protection but instead they installed a 12”x6” cross. You can do one of the following:

1. Continue the 6” system and ignore your water system standards;

2. Leave the 12”x6” cross and 6” valve and install a 6”x8” reducer then 8” line which will create a choke point and potential for cavitation in the fitting; or

3. Replace the cross with the correct size and build the system to standards.

Option 1 is least cost but you will have to remember to install an 8” on Lola in the future. Option 2 will probably work as long as your pressures and velocity remain balanced using looped waterlines. Option 3 is most expensive and will correct bad decision-making in the past.

My recommendation is if the church is not taking fire suppression off of 3rd Street then choose Option 1 and leave it as a 6” waterline and make sure you install an 8” on Lola in the future. We can put a note right on the plans that the future Lola line will be 8 inches. Let me know which way you want to go and we will make it happen. Thanks Jen.

Hi Gerald,

I was able to find the plans for the Berkley water line construction. Good news, 2-12” Butterfly Valves and 2-6” Gate Valves crossing in the middle. See Sheet C2.
