Subject: Peracetic Acid (PAA)

Importance: Normal

PAA is an alternative to using the typical Chlorine (calcium hypochlorite tablets) and Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid - removes residual when discharging to Molalla) at the WWTP.

This is worth a running a pilot study

Benefits for Molalla

· Reduction in Chemical Costs

· No requirement to de-chlorinate

· Improves Employee Safety from caustic chlorines

· Reduces handling time for employees to move the chlorine tablets

· Small CIP cost to install Peracetic Acid tanks

· No interference with nitrogen compounds

· Local suppliers are increase supplies of product

Disadvantages

· Minimal use in Oregon, trial with DEQ for permitting

· Small risk of increased effluent organic contact due to the acetic acid and lack of residual
