Hi Peggy – Below is a list of events and conversations with Jeff since August 8th, 2014.
On Friday August 8th, 2014 Garret Edumunds and myself made a visit to personally talk to Jeff McCrum regarding his pattern of absences on Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays generally following a vacation or scheduled Friday off. Garrett approached him with the issue at hand and also let him know the pattern of his absences was also recognized by many of his peers in Public Works. Garrett continued to ask him if he was doing okay or if he had anything he wanted to share with us. Jeff replied that he was aware he was missing time and been having some medical issues and was working with his doctor on them. He mention he was changing his diet and taking it easier on the weekend trying not to do too much. He also ensured us this wasn’t going to be a reoccurring problem. He also expressed some boredom of the job so I briefly talked about his added Blackflow specialist duties. He stated he was relieved with the new assignment and work. He also stated interest in learn the public works side, mainly waterline repairs and installations. Garrett said he would be more than happy to include him in the work and said to let him know when he had free time available. I handed him a copy of a calendar that recorded the last nine (9) months of leave taken. We then left.
About a week later we had a brief conversation regarding paying for backflow certification class. The week of August 18th we spoke briefly about Keith being out a few days on S/L and resetting the system due to a power outage. He said he was doing fine otherwise.
Keith informed me on 8/25/2014 that Jeff’s sister called in sick for Jeff.
Keith informed me on the morning or 8/26/14 that Jeff called in sick. Keith called me later that morning before noon and informed me that Jeff quit the city. I attempted to call Jeff that afternoon and left him a message. I acknowledged that he called Keith and gave his resignation, I informed him to return his city property and please send a written notice of his resignation.
On 8/27/14, Jeff’s mother called me and informed me that Jeff was in the hospital at Sunnyside Kaiser and would be there for a while longer and that she could not divulge any information. She stated that he was not in his right mind when giving his resignation. At that time I informed her that there was nothing I could do without a doctor note or a call regarding his resignation statement.
Later that afternoon around 2:40 PM on 8/27/14, Jeff called my cell and asked if it was a good time to talk. I agreed. He informed me that he did not wish to quit his job. He stated that he was in the hospital locked up for possibly 7 days. At that time I told him he would need to talk to Peggy in HR regarding the specifics on what to do next. He asked if Peggy was at the 6855 number. I relied yes but she has an extension. I provided him her extension and said take care. We then hung up.
