Jennifer,

It was nice meeting you today and sounds like welcome to Molalla. Hopefully the job turns out to be a great opportunity for you.

As noted I have interest in GIS and Land Surveying from my years of experience. I have been lucky to work with GIS folks and also complete several projects of Survey quality mapping for utility features directly into ArcGIS. This was done by skipping Survey softwares for several clients in the past. City of Woodburn sanitary sewer, City of Springfield and ODOT Beltline Road @ I-5 improvement project, and initial marketing for City of Hillsboro storm sewer system of which survey group worked on after I left CH2M HILL. Long story we can talk about when we meet. See attached for technology insights.

POB (Point of Beginning) Surveyor magazine Sept 2009 article of CH2M HILL Woodburn project:

I am not trying to brag or sell you anything. Just trying to note that I have learned a few options and want to share with you and the City. It shocks me that more are not using these processes and maybe it is due to unaware or the normal to not vary much from past practices? I especially want to share since you are starting a brand new GIS database. Survey grade data is possible with a slightly different approach then most have taken in the past. My past experience is Leica, but I now use Trimble and guessing Trimble has an option. Also Survey software Carlson GIS has been talking about a new very similar process. I actually think that WDOT Surveyors might have been using Carlson Survey program too? Key is to link Survey instruments directly with GIS to eliminate some steps and hold onto more GIS data directly from fieldwork.

Anyway it would be nice to meet you and your GIS tech. I can forward some insights I have learned and see if you have any interest in learning more.

Again nice to meet you and guess we will touch bases again as the Bear Creek Byway goes in.

Thanks,

Tony Brooks, PLS
