Gerald, we are in much better shape now. Although the dense information in this reference book is virtually unusable to an operator during a test (that’s why labs would normally have Lab SOPs!) I can now begin to verify and ensure QA in this lab. For example: James asked what temperature he was supposed to set the TSS oven to. We found it in Standard Methods 19th edition: 103 deg F. I can verify why the BOD5 refrigerator is set to 20 dec C: Standard Methods 19th edition states that one must warm all samples to 20 dec C before beginning any test.

I don’t think Lab SOPs ever existed in this lab. I suspect the sheets on the walls were cheat-sheets to help the operators along and do the tests from memory. I can’t imagine why one would remove them, as it just puts Jake and James in a position where they don’t know what temperatures to use or how many milliliters to use for mixing DO seed, etc.

In any case, we have what we need now. This lab should certainly make it a priority to write procedures for itself, and update the QA/QC manual with them as soon as practical, and we need to get all operators to review and sign it.

Could we please have Christie order the 23rd edition:
