If we look into this and find it not feasible, causes us problems, or increases paperwork and scrutiny by the state then we may just pass on recycling it. Also, would be good to know how much water is backwashed and a percent comparison to the overall water we produce. If we are talking about a small percentage of drinking water being backwashed then it may not be worth it. We will just need to document. Thanks.

Thanks Ryan, I will review this stuff… I may have gotten ahead of myself; should have double checked with you first.

Andy,

Here is a document from the early 2000’s which talks about the City’s response to the Filter Backwash Rule. The full rule can be found at OAR 333-061-0032 (10) & 0040 (2). I was told when I started at the WTP that the City complied with this rule by no longer recycling the backwash water. There is no longer any connection from the pond to the influent pipe. They most likely stopped when they brough in the new ductile line from the intake but I would need to verify on the plans. Just some background information. I believe water systems still can recycle part of their backwash water if all the criteria are met.

Subject: Backwash Recycling Question

Good Morning James, I’m working on implementing the items from our new Water Conservation Plan, and one of the things on the list (Table 11.4.1) is to look in to the status of the rules surrounding backwash water recycling. We are under the impression that no one is allowed to do this. Are you aware of any updates to these rules we may have missed that would make this allowed?

Thank you!

Respectfully,

Andy Peters
