If we run out of ideas from OHA or Dyer, here is a resource if we need to use it for water treatment. They designed the treatment upgrade for the Salem water plant to treat cyanotoxins.

Subject: Offer of Support: Office Hours with Carollo's National Water Treatment and Partner Public Outreach Experts

Oregon Water Providers,

Our thoughts have been with you as we watched you successfully meet the many challenges associated with maintaining service during this unprecedented fire season. As the smoke begins to clear and you begin to shift from meeting your most immediate demands, you have no doubt started to consider near- and long-term water quality/treatment challenges. We are reaching out to let you know that the Carollo team of national water treatment experts is ready and willing to support you whenever and however is useful for you and your team. Carollo can’t be on the front lines helping you respond to the current events, but we can help you be better prepared for some of the challenges you might face in the coming weeks and months.

One of the important lessons we learned from the cyanotoxin event in Salem in 2018 is that each system has unique needs and concerns. This is undoubtedly true for the current wildfires; given the unique nature of the fires’ impacts on your watershed and facilities, a general webinar or workshop might not be that helpful. Instead, we are prepared to provide ‘side-bar’ conversations with individual agencies so we can really dig into the level of detail that you might find useful when responding to this emergency.

To that end, Carollo is offering to host what we are calling ‘office hours’. You and your team are invited to schedule an hour or two to informally talk with our team about specific impacts to your watershed, monitoring and sampling strategies, treatment modifications, cost impacts and public communication (Libby Bakke is available to support these efforts as needed). If you are interested in scheduling some informal ‘office hours’ with our technical experts – at no cost to you – send me a note and I’ll get something on our calendars. We are currently targeting Wednesday and Friday mornings, from 9-12, and will schedule on a first come, first serve basis.

If these times don’t work for you, or if there’s a better way to for us to help you or your team, please let us know!

As we began to think about how we might help, we quickly identified a range of resources we are able to provide – including access to individuals who have direct experience in dealing with the impacts of other previous wildfires throughout the West. To help you all begin puzzling through these issues, below is a brief list of some of key issues this team thought might be relevant/interesting to you, based on their research, literature review and lessons learned while helping other agencies recover from fires in their watershed. We hope you find this a good starting point for our discussions.

Hopefully you find this approach useful; if so, we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks, and take care/stay safe.
