Notes: Note from Ryan: These spare PLC components will help us meet our
redundancy requirement to keep our treatment plant operational if we were
to have a PLC failure. Our current PLC's have been in service for approx
20 years and the fact that some of these components have a 2-4 week lead
time has created a need to have these parts in our inventory and we have
seen similar failures in other PLCs at the City.
Note From Andy: Inventories should always be kept low to achieve JIT
benefits. But redundancy should be meet with kanban inventory like this
where you buy as you use. We've already saved major shutdowns and problems
this year by having these pieces at the WWTP. Troubleshooting and changing
out PLC parts is a new skill the Operators have been learning, so before
where we would have frantically called Industrial Systems and payed large
sums to do a simple PLC card swap out, we are handling it in house. I
agree with this purchase, and we should still come in under budget in the
