Attachments: image001.jpg; Thanks for all of info Gerald, looks as though this video may have caught the attention of certain people who might want to help make a better park. Will see what happens, I have looked into this before but came up dry as to who could help because of the size of our town or because a park already existed. I understand about kids traveling for skate parks, but as before if the citizens of Molalla help by driving by and checking in we can make sure the park is safe for all. As it should always be

The skate park was built sometime between 1994 and 2000. So, its 20 years old and that is about the time when skate parks were starting to be built in Oregon. A lot has changed in the design of parks and I oversaw the design and construction of the park in Silverton. The price tag for that park, which was only phase 1, was over $300,000 if memory serves. So, they are not cheap and they only serve a small portion of the total park users within the City. I would love to tear it out and build the kids a new one, but with what money? I can’t use SDC’s to pay for a replacement and we have a laundry list of needs in other park locations.
I’m OK with his critique of the facility and agree it is not the best. The best thing he said at the end of the video was to avoid it. That means our youth can use it without outsiders taking it over. That is exactly what happened in Silverton. The Portland-Metro crowd came down and muscled out the local kids for about a year. We had to step up cleaning and police patrols because they brought alcohol, trash, and other unmentionables with them.
If the community does want a new one then they could do a fund raising campaign and get grants to build a new park. The thing they have to remember is that Oregon law requires that we follow bidding, awarding, contracting and prevailing wage rules on publicly built projects. They will be shocked at the cost compared to what a private entity has to pay, but that is the law we have to follow.

Should we ask the person who produced the video what they think should happen and if they would be interested in heading up that effort to improve the skate park?
