Dear Nina,

Last night Dan Hafley did an great job last night at our hearing in Molalla. He and Mr. Paulson (sp?) were patient and informative. We appreciate their time and knowledge.

The resident just west of Floragon with land bordering Bear Creek had several concerns. One was that his 20 foot deep well has never been tested for dioxin. He was concerned enough a few years ago that he did a free test - but clearly, since Dan noted it costs a $1,000 to test for dioxin that was not something that had been ruled out. I wonder why DEQ, with a landowner just off the Floragon site with a very shallow well near Bear Creek which is prone to huge ponding and flooding, did not require testing of at least that well.

Of even more concern was this man's worries about the huge open air log chipping/grinding operation that has been installed on the northern part of Floragon. He voiced concern about air quality and Dan took his contact info. I am asking you to follow up with Dan to make sure that man gets proper intake with the air quality division of Oregon DEQ. This open air operation makes that open air fertilizer plant that was shut down look like a drop in the bucket. Please advise me as well who the air quality complaint people are for the city of Molalla because I can see that will be an issue that needs to be looked at - how a huge open air chipping / grinding operation can exist safely in the middle of a city, spewing wood dust particles over residents.

Thanks,

Susan Hansen
