Subject: FW: Request for intervention to halt harmful clearcutting operations in the City of Molalla drinking water supply

Importance: Normal

I get one of these a year or so and the response is essentially the same. Not much we can do if they are not breaking any law and the ODF is the group responsible for managing that activity. If they don’t, something happens, and Molalla residents are effected then the City can sue the state. Wouldn’t be the first time the state got sued and lost. Recent timber revenues and management case last year.

Dear Ms. Krop,

If you have specific knowledge that the logging practices on lands identified in your letter are in violation of state or federal rules, please contact the Oregon Department of Forestry. Or, as a private group you can determine with your legal counsel if you have a right to file legal action against those property owners to enforce violations of any rules.

If the landowners are following rules for timber harvesting activities, then the City has no legal authority to stop activities on private lands which are deemed legal under current law. Thank you.

Subject: Request for intervention to halt harmful clearcutting operations in the City of Molalla drinking water supply

Dear Mr. Huff, Mr. Fisher, & Mr. Haasken,

Due to current and ongoing threats to the City of Molalla’s drinking water source area (PWS #4100534), the Center for Sustainable Economy in conjunction with community partners, the Clackamas Climate Action Council, request that you intervene to halt harmful clearcut operations in this public drinking water supply. Currently, over 2,300 acres of clearcuts are planned in the city of Molalla’s surface drinking watershed alone. These practices have been proven to deplete water quantity and harm water quality, and if allowed to continue, will threaten the water supply for future generations of residents.

We would greatly appreciate your thoughtful consideration of the issues raised in this letter and ask that you reach out to us at your earliest convenience to discuss further.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Samantha Krop
