Elizabeth – Thanks for sending this note. I protect my cubs from time to time – even Gerald. I want to be honest with you, a certain Councilor has thrown a couple of similar fits in City Hall as well. Even heard a comment about “who cares about pedestrians”. My concern at this point is that with some attitudes and inaccurate emotions we will lose an opportunity here. Slowing traffic down when people reach Molalla is an action item both in our TSP and promotes our Visioning tasks.
A couple of thoughts when we have a chance to chat:
- * Intersection “bulb outs” are not new. I worked on a bulb out project in Roseburg 20 years ago. Gresham altered their Downtown with bulb outs years ago. People don’t like change and usually will object to traffic calming devices at the same time they are complaining about speeders.
- * Storm drainage was a large part of this project and was reconstructed through the intersection.
- * The width of the intersection is 24 feet or, 12 foot travel lanes. Our stand is 11 foot travel lanes
- * We really do consider the actual situation before we pursue a design. In other words, we know that there is no parking on the north side of Shirley. However, Cole is very wide street.
- * Our police department writes quite a few speeding tickets between 211 and Cole.
- * Cole and Shirley are within the “Safe Routes to School” plan.
