I listened to him. He fundamentally doesn’t understand a couple of things. We need the water as part of our wastewater collection and treatment process. Without the water conveying the feces it would build up in the system, go septic, damage the pipes, and create hydrogen sulfide which destroys concrete manholes. The other thing he doesn’t understand is not everyone operates in his world of biodegradable soaps and environmentally friendly materials that are expensive to the common consumer. When they start dumping stuff into their drains and then use it on the lawn or garden we run into a problem of ground and groundwater contamination. The reason why we have the systems we use is because human, while well meaning, are dirty and irresponsible animals and have a habit of destroying the environment around us. We use up resources until they are gone and the only check we have in place to stop us from overconsuming is cost.

Enough of my pessimistic philosophy. The international building and plumbing codes actually do cover the use of grey water and it is being implemented in parts of Portland, to reduce water costs, and it comes at a significant cost. To plumb a SF home for this system makes the house too expensive. Plus, the percent of home buyers that want those types of homes is so small the builders aren’t even considering it. Once the water is used in the commercial buildings it still goes down the sewer system but their water use for flushing toilets and urinals drops off significantly. We don’t need to do anything in our code but the Council can support this type of system in single family homes. It just depends on your level and type of support. Does the Council want to give them tax breaks? We can’t give them SDC breaks or permit breaks. Some things to ponder.

Gerald,

I heard an interesting perspective in house greywater on a podcast I listened to. I am interested on your perspective is on it.

Do you think we could incorporate this in our code for new development? Would it have a significant impact on the cost of a new home? Would it help our wastewater issues?

Please skip to minute 38:50 and listen up to 40:20. Please let me know what you think.

I know you are very busy so please do not spend more than a few minutes on this.
