Yep. If there are any monuments even close to what we are working on then we do a pre and post with the County. Thankfully most of our sewer and water work in the older areas are in the middle of the lots but our engineers and surveyors do a check just to make sure that nothing is in danger of disturbance or removal. We also have replacement of disturbed or destroyed monuments in our construction contract and require a filing with the County surveyor prior to project closeout.

Not sure what they did in the past prior to my arrival. Though I’m not a PLS, I have my LSIT and started on the survey side so I’m a bit more militant about protection of monuments. Let me know if you find anything amiss in the field or know of a City or private project that may have had a monument issue. Thanks Tony.

Gerald,

Thanks for the reply and insights. Interesting on PDG who has gone through a lot of turnover in the Surveying group from what I hear. Also, I did not know about Dyer Partnership so I will learn more about them.

I know the crew I talked to was finding property corners and surveying them. I guess for sewer projects they are still needed to define ROW and property lines if any laterals are rebuilt. If any chance of monuments being destroyed during a construction project, then Pre & Post Construction surveys are required. Better safe than sorry on corner monuments for we do not want to be a State of Washington where monuments are getting destroyed like crazy and no rules in place to protect and document them. I know this cost Cities money on projects, but it protects the public and documents existing public records. As you can see a touchy one for me from past big project work and more yet now that I am working for private residences trying to provide cost effective work.

Hi Tony,

PDG no longer works for the City. Our on-call engineer is Dyer Partnership and they did a survey for engineering design of sewer. We are currently working on a project on Fenton but have no roadway improvement projects planned. The last one we are just finishing up is on the north end of Fenton. The work on Lola is several years away and will only include sewer and possibly waterline replacement work. Thanks.

Subject: Mon Recovery Survey

Gerald,

I believe it was last summer I saw a Survey crew working on mapping either Berkley Ave or Lola Ave for a City of Molalla project per the crew. I am thinking it was Project Delivery Group. I am looking at a potential Survey at 502 E 4th St and not seeing a Monument Recovery Survey for the street project in the area. With current monument challenges these surveys really help. By State law a Pre-Construction and Post Construction Surveys are required. I know in the past some of these have slipped on City projects and they are killing private surveys when this happens and the reasons for the documentation process.

Can you tell me the status of this survey and what to expect? Also what survey company do I talk to for the details?

Thanks,
