Subject: The real answer on rates

Mayor and Council – Our understanding is that yesterday a Chamber representative made statements regarding Molalla water rates in comparison with the City of Silverton water rates. The comparison drew conclusions that Molalla’s rates were higher and because of that people could not afford to water their lawns and landscapes were dead in Molalla as opposed to the green you see in Silverton. Some of you may also recall that we asked people to conserve water over the past few years due to the potential drought conditions in Western Oregon. Accurate information is important.

Below is the comparison for the monthly service costs for a homeowner in Molalla vs. a homeowner in Silverton.

Sewer Fee

Stormwater Fee

Note that Silverton residents pay more in water, sewer, and stormwater fees plus pay for street maintenance and parks maintenance.

Other components of water rates include our eventual need to spend $2M for a new additional filtration system at the treatment plant that will allow us to produce 4 MGD of water along with a series of other improvements. In checking with Silverton they are looking at over $10M to replace their antiquated treatment plant and other improvements. In other words, they will pay even more than Molalla in the long term.

Please let me know if you have questions.
