Before going into Saturday’s forecast, I want to catch you up on the storm Thursday. Thursday’s storm caused winds on the coast from 60- 70 MPH and from 20 – 40 MPH in the valley. There was 2 – 5 inches of rain from the coast to the valley, which has made the soil very wet for the next event. There was also a tornado in Manzanita this morning, which first responders are still working in that area. However, at this point there have been no reports of injuries. Saturday’s storm will be stronger than Thursday’s storm. The prime time for the storm is noon to 8 pm. · Wind – expect downed trees and limbs and power outages. Inland looking at strong winds starting around 4 pm and strongest around 7 pm. Winds inland/Cascade foothills are expected to be 20 – 45 MPH with gusts from 60 – 70 MPH. All southerly winds. (AT THIS TIME THE WIND IS THE BIGGEST CONCERN WITH THIS STORM). · Seas – If traveling to the coast expect very dangerous high surf/tides and possible tidal overflow. Tides are a great concern and could come with some coastal flooding. · Rain – localized urban/street flooding, plugged culverts/drains. Clackamas is looking at 1.5 to 2 inches in metro areas and up to 3 inches in the Cascade region. River flooding is not expected but urban flooding is possible from clogged drains. · Snow level is 6000 feet. There is fairly high confidence that the storm will come on shore along the Washington coast, however, the low pressure and how it tracks will impact the landfall. As you can see above Oregon will still see some very high winds and rainfall. At this time Sunday looks a lot like today with may a little less wind. So we should have some break in the rain. Please continue to watch www.weather.gov/portland for the latest update. I will send any updates that may indicate drastically worst conditions than what is in this briefing. Just a reminder in messages to the general public include messages regarding using generators safely (never have the generator in-doors) and to be careful using food from the refrigerator/freezer after long-term power outages. Have a good weekend and be careful. nb Nancy S.
