Subject: Recheck

I/we had an interesting day yesterday and I wanted to present my thoughts to you that I had last night at 1:30AM. Part of yesterday is “just part of the job”. However, what I want all of you to think about is whether or not you as a Department Head grasp the direction this City is going and why? Secondly, does your Staff know and understand the direction and why? Change is hard and sometimes costly. It may be difficult to see progress in some areas while watching your own desires not be met.

Yesterday I went from a completely contradictory meeting regarding home delivery of marijuana with the Chief to a phone call regarding wastewater. Following lunch I was part of a personnel discussion that I was completely unhappy about and reacted poorly at best. To wrap up the day we put a press release and 100 page study of our wastewater treatment facility on the website and Facebook letting the community know that we need to come up with $35 million (maybe) to build a new plant. Needless to say I did not sleep much last night.

This City and our organization must grow up. We have issues and concerns in every department that need attention. That is why we are here. That is why each one of your staff members are here. We all have come a long way over the past 6 years and we need to recognize that accomplishment but there is more to do. If you left tomorrow is the City and your Department in a better place than when you started?

I want to enjoy my time at work. I want you all to enjoy your time at work. You have all heard that before. That does not mean that work should not be completed, decorum not met or general respect for the City, co-workers and the work you accomplish doesn’t matter. It definitely does matter. There is stress and I am blessed to have Department Heads that care about this City and their accomplishments.

Make sure your Staff knows and understands where we are going and why. If you do not know then ask. Everyone and I mean everyone needs to be on the same page.
