If you are looking for ideas, we could start with a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) of “Active Shooter Situation” in the front office. That would identify the weaknesses and allow you to focus training and/or security improvements to target our specific weaknesses. The results will be across the board though, you’ll get the $1,000, $10,000, and $100,000 safety improvement recommendations. So setting a budget in advance would help us understand how much effort we expect give at this time. There is no limit to how far you can go with readiness… it’s can be a black hole!

All – The incident discussed in Tangent below caused me to think a little about our situation and I wanted to know what you all think.

Oregon is an open carry State. So, do we need to conduct training for those out front or conduct active shooter training or classes for potential City Hall occurrences?

We recently had in incident in which a gentleman came into City Hall with a rifle, hand gun and knife. We only have two employees and I was gone yesterday when he came in. The sheriff’s office was called as we are right next to an elementary school and they saw the gentlemen walking by the school. Currently we are locking the front and back door (we are in an Old Farm House) and people can gain entry by ringing the bell. We have a couple camera’s and were able to get him on camera as my co- worker was smart and had him come down to my office to get a copy of an ordinance for him. She doesn’t have a camera and I am looking at getting a couple more. The gentleman didn’t threaten her directly but of course it scared her. She remained calm. Does anyone have good security tips for us?
