Hello Mac,

I am the lead here with Engage Milwaukie if you want to chat about it at some point. We have been using it since November of last year so are new to it as well, but so far we are pleased with the results overall.

In terms of setup, one of the most challenging things is figuring out whether or not you want to require registration and what demographics you want to collect as part of registration. This can be based upon what your goals are for the site in general. For us we really wanted the tool to give us an idea over time about who is engaging with the city online and who we might be missing. To do so you need to require registration. At first there was a lot of push back due to registration perceived as being a barrier to participation, but the registered user total on the site grows daily and this gives us an audience to go back to as projects are added to the site over time. That can only be done by requiring registration. In addition, we have great statistics about who is engaging on the site.

Management of the site includes three site admins and about ten project admins from various departments. Some of the project admins have used the site to date, while others haven’t yet, but will in the future. I make a schedule of what is to come so that we don’t put too many projects on the site at one time.

We ended up using Bang the Table, but at first took a very hard look at The Hive, which we really liked, but ended up not moving forward with due to the fact that at the time their operations and most of their clients aren’t based in the US. They could be worth checking out if you want to see a similar tool and what is offered.

I would be happy to talk more if you want to set up a Zoom meeting or give me a call. Just let me know what works for you.

Jason

Hi Alison and Jason,

We’re flirting with acquiring BTT for Community Engagement and would love to pick your brains on setup, management, and any other information you think is valuable based on your experience. I appreciate any comments or discussion you can share. Have a great day!
