I love small towns! I took my lunch time walk today and bumped into Dennis, the manager for Twin Firs Mobile Home Park. He said, “Are you the new planner?!? We’ve been waiting for you. We’re glad you’re here.” He told me Mike P. dropped by last night and asked him to open the gate. Dennis had just come from opening the gate five minutes before I met him. He asked if I was checking on him. I said, “No. Just out walking. I didn’t know Mike would be reaching out to you.”

Good news. I will respond to Mike to let him know what I saw out in the field just now.

I talked to Mike’s assistant at the Fire District this morning. She said he is out until May 20th. I’m a little concerned about having to wait this long. I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to. She became a little defensive and said he is the only Fire Marshal. After a little while, she did say Mike would be checking emails. So I hope to hear from him.

If I don’t, I may ask you again to see if you know the Chief and can bump this up to him. I don’t like to do this, but I also think it’s a pretty harsh comment for the Fire District to expect we’ll deliver (especially when he’s out of the office).

Good afternoon Mike:

I am the new Senior Planner at Molalla. I started here on April 24th. Steve Miller has finished his interim work with our City and I’m now in the saddle, so to speak.

I have worked for several Oregon cities over the years, including Milwaukie, Gresham, and Tualatin. I have always had a great working relationship with the Fire Marshal’s. I don’t know if you know Ty Darby from TVFR, but he was my last Fire Marshal in Tualatin. He is a great professional. I also know the lead or Deputy Fire Marshal Kate from TVFR.

I just called your office and learned you are out of the office until May 20th. I wanted to talk through your comments a bit to better understand the background and options.

I don’t want to share these comments with mobile homeowner until I have had a chance to talk this through with you. I want to learn if there are options for fire-department approved locking gates. Does your department use Knox Boxes on gates for access? Is this an option in this situation? Are there other alternatives? Being unaware of the history here, it’s very possible you have already explored these options with the property owner.

Your office assistant said you might be checking emails in your absence. Given the severity of this comment, I don’t want to share this comment with the homeowner. I would prefer the fire department to do that – especially since it’s not anything the homeowner can correct. It’s really an issue between the Fire District and the manufactured home park owner/property manager. What kind of communication have you had previously with this manufactured home park owner? Are they aware of this issue?

As you can see, I have many questions rolling through my mind for this permit. I look forward to hearing back from you as soon as you are able to respond. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Alice Cannon
