I have requested a bid from the contractor on how much it would cost to add the 2nd ramp. The District may be able to come up with the money depending on how much it is. The District has not issued a permit.

Hi Basil,

The contractor is working under an ODOT permit and we have instructed him to work directly with your folks for the ramp installation. We told him that he only needed a permit from you even to connect to our sidewalk which is only a few feet away. We have no objection to you requiring a single ramp pointed east with a curb to prevent travel to the north. I think it can be done (see attached) as long as he meets your new criteria for ramp slopes. He’s going to need a little guidance from you to make it meet your needs. I think it will work.

What is the timeline here, can we delay adding the ADA ramp a few days or even a week?

Although I briefly looked at the design drawing that was provided, I did not send review comments since two ramps are required at a corner. From the brief review I did do, it did NOT appear that the design met all ADA criteria. I’ll review the drawing again tomorrow and send review comments so that the design can be edited for a 2nd and maybe final review. Caution: if built per the design drawing the curb ramp may not pass inspection and be rejected.

We also need more time to resolve the question about design exception, crosswalk closure paper work, and signs installed at a later date.

Basil, Gerald Fisher says the contractor is going to walk if we require 2 ramps at the corner. Could we put in one ramp that leads across Stowers only and then ODOT do the sidewalk closure paper work and install sidewalk closure sign at a later date? The concrete is already ripped out.

Yes, a curb ramp can lead to a driveway and there are designs for this. It doesn’t always work-out though and a design exception may be needed to omit a ramp and close the crossing. I think this may be the case here as the crossing area is pretty much in the center of the driveway.

One caution about a design exception request is that the ADA ramp that was constructed at SE corner will likely get mentioned in the review. We need to have two ramps at this corner also to help with an accessible crossing of the highway.

Let me know how I can help. - Basil

It may be easier to just put in 2 ramps. Can a ramp lead to a driveway?

Two ADA ramps are required at the intersection corner unless a design exception is approved to just add one. Design exception approval may require that the west leg ped crossing is closed, via ODOT process for closing crosswalks. We should discuss ramp design as well to insure ODOT criteria or standards are met. Please let me know about this.

I should mention that two ramps are required at the SE corner; where it appears a recent project only added one.

Brenda, As soon as I get a design that shows a 5 foot wide ramp I will issue the permit. Also I am not sure about the particular style of ramp is appropriate here at this corner.

Basil, Would you please call me. I would like to discuss the style of ramp being used.

Alliks, Please go to RD755, RD756, RD757 and RD759 for standard drawings for ADA ramps at link below. Please see attached form for what ODOT uses to inspect ADA ramps.

https://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/ENGSERVICES/pages/roadway_drawings.aspx#Roadway_700_-_Curbs,_etc.

Basil, Please see attached drawing. According to the drawing the sidewalk will be around 7.5 % grade. Will this be a problem?

Larry, Do you see any problems?

Hi Marlene,

We have been coordinating with City of Molalla and need someone from ODOT to assess the sidewalk for the above address.

They have said that there is a question of the existing sidewalk leading up to the ADA Ramp where it needs to be poured.

The grade percentage seems to be slightly off and I would like to meet with someone to see if it meets ODOTs approval.

City of Molalla said that if ODOT approves the existing sidewalk, then we can complete the process for the ADA Ramp and pour.

Please let me know when we can set up a meeting.

Thank you,

Alliks Cam

Alliks, Please submit a plan sheet showing grade percentage on each location of the ADA Ramp. I will need to submit it to our Region 1 Tech Center for engineering review.
