RE: Maintenance Plans and EQC meeting on October 4, 2002
Dear :
On October 4, 2002, the Environmental Quality Commission (EQC) adopted a PM10 maintenance plan for Klamath Falls, along with industrial rules for former PM10 nonattainment areas.
Adoption of the maintenance plan allows us to request the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to redesignate the Klamath Falls area from nonattainment to attainment. The plan ensures that the area will continue to meet air quality standards for at least 10 years, and allow for more flexibility in siting new major industry and transportation projects. We recognize redesignation is important to Klamath Falls because it rewards the community for the hard work it took to gain good air quality.
The plan and rules have been submitted to EPA for their review and approval. Once approved, EPA will redesignate Klamath Falls as in attainment. EPA has 18 months to approve or disapprove plans. DEQ will work with EPA to encourage them to move as quickly as possible in their review.
If you have any questions on the process or the plan, please feel free to call me at 541-388-6146 extension 245.
Sincerely,
Larry Calkins
Air Quality Specialist
