3:45 – Discussion of question #1
• “Considering the human health criteria within the water quality standards- to what extent are populations who consume more than the current fish consumption rate used in the standards (17.5 g/day) at a greater risk for health impacts?”
o Review Oregon’s current human health equation and how risk is calculated in this process
▪ Refer to page 19 of EPA Human Health Criteria Calculation Matrix
o Given the current criteria, explain what, if any, health risks higher fish consuming populations face with the current human health criteria as compared to those who consume at or below 17.5 g/day;
▪ Refer to table given out at the meeting
▪ Assumptions in the method
• 70 kg body weight
• 70 years lifetime exposure
• 10-6 cancer risk used
• 2 L water intake
▪ Uncertainties
• BCF
• Toxicity (cancer slope and reference dose)
• Fish Consumption Rate
▪ Limitations
o Discuss the differences between estimating cumulative toxicity vs. chemical specific toxicity.
